Faith United Methodist Church and Spirit of Peace site

In “Tour stop 4”

A congregation that began in Hooper’s depot eventually joined two rural churches as Faith United Methodist. The Maple Street property preserves another chapter: the 1980 replacement building now houses Spirit of Peace. Notes: The guide’s 1969 shorthand should not erase the Winslow congregation’s separate 1968 union with Hooper. Parsonage dates differ: 1891 in the centennial book, 1892 in the tour. The 1892 conference account supports existence by that reporting period. The exact legal closure date of Faith and sale-deed details were not independently established. Do not infer disaffiliation or a particular reason for closure. The 1976 Methodist section’s 1870 Presbyterian-building date conflicts with Joel Warner’s 1880 dedication account; the expansion does not repeat the 1870 date. The 2026 book and tour overlap substantially; repetition between them is not independent confirmation. The January 1908 report calls the other temporary church school German Lutheran, without naming its congregation; this record does not assign it to Zion or St. John’s.

Former St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hooper

In “Tour stop 15”

The former St. John’s building carries a rural congregation’s history into Hooper. Its story includes a school, a moved church, a 1911 replacement and a second relocation before its 1956 dedication in town. Notes: The July 14, 1955 original newspaper reports future move preparations at the July 10 meeting, conflicting with treating December 1954 as a completed move. The precise transport day is still unverified; the 1976 photograph’s1955 label does not supply that day. Do not confuse this congregation with St. John’s Ridgeley near Scribner, which has a separate archive and history. The St. Paul’s of Winslow considered in the 1950s merger discussion is not rural St. Paul’s at County Road E. Private residential use is the tour’s 2026 description; the tour is not permission to enter or approach private grounds.
