About This Exhibition

Opening on June 25 and 26, 2026 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, also known as Greasy Grass, a painting by Joan Waltemath will be presented at 204 North Main Street in Hooper as part of the Hooper Sesquicentennial celebration.

The 12 and a half foot high painting, “The Fallen,” is one of eight paintings in Waltemath’s award-winning series Treaty of 1868: an Epic. The piece was created to honor all those who fell in the battle in 1876.

The exhibition will be open through mid-July. During Hooper’s 150th Celebration weekend, visitors may view the exhibition on Friday, July 3 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Saturday, July 4 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday, July 5 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Historic Setting

The artwork is being presented in the former State Bank in Hooper, which dates from 1886 and later served as the office of Hooper’s weekly paper, the Sentinel. The layers of history held in the walls and ceiling of the existing structure create an appropriate historical context for experiencing “The Fallen.”

Additional Works on Display

As part of the installation, photographic images of those who took part in the battle, contemporary paintings of historical figures, and other small works will also be displayed.

Community Contributions

Anyone who has photographs or other images of ancestors who fought in the battle is encouraged to email jwaltemathfoundation@gmail.com to have them included in the display, or bring them to 204 N Main Street in Hooper in June.

Additional Details

Additional details will be available in June.

About the Joan Waltemath Foundation

The Joan Waltemath Foundation is a nonprofit organization in Hooper, Nebraska, established by abstract painter Joan Waltemath. The foundation is located in a historic building on Main Street that has evolved from a working studio into a place for art, public gathering, community engagement, and cultural connection.

Waltemath, who was born and raised in Nebraska and is based in New York, purchased the building as a place to create large-scale paintings. Over time, the project grew into a collaborative architectural and artistic space designed to connect Waltemath’s work, the building’s history, and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The foundation building is being developed as a living gallery and public space, creating a setting where art, architecture, history, and community can come together in Hooper.
